Adulthood
... the forgotten era in a cat's life!

Adult cats are no longer kittens but not yet old enough to be classified as senior citizens. Although they are technically in the prime of their life, this can create a false sense of security about their health. Some cats will be naturally fit and healthy, at least until they reach "old age". In reality, keeping most cats healthy requires some tweaking here and there...that's where I can help!

The first six to twelve months of a cat's life is a very exciting time. It is often a bit of a whirlwind of vet visits where you have hopefully been given lots of support and advice about what is best for your precious feline: vaccinations, worming, flea control, micro-chipping, neutering, pet insurance, diets - the list goes on! Just when you thought you were overwhelmed.... there is a dramatic pause and if you're lucky the next check-up isn't until annual vaccination time.

After this many owners get lulled into a false sense of security, not envisaging needing to be proactive about their cat's health until their senior years. It is a common misconception that adult cats require little veterinary attention and that a cat's health simply looks after itself.

The luckier cats get a check up at annual vaccination, but a year in a cat's life is equivalent to a long time in human years... imagine if you were only allowed to go to the GP every 7 years? All sorts of nasties could be brewing and chances are by the time your seven yearly appointment arrived you may be beyond help, or have a mile long list of ailments that could fill a dozen appointment slots! Unless your cat is in perfect health, the time allowed by many vet practices for annual vaccination is not long enough to discuss any concerns you may have about your cat and important clues of pending ill-health can be missed.

Adult Cat Wellness Checks

Since the WellCat 4 Life program was started by the Feline Advisory Bureau, it really has bridged the gap between kitten and geriatric stages of life and they have compiled structured guidelines to help willing vets and cat owners to provide excellent preventative health care for cats throughout their life.

To find out the importance of wellness in the stages of adult life, select the appropriate age range below and follow the link.
