Trap those rogue bits of litter before your feet do!
Don't you just hate getting cat litter stuck to your feet? Your cat does too - you must've seen them doing those back foot ninja kicks when they've finished answering a call of nature in the box. So you can see the value in getting a mat that traps as much of that pesky litter as possible to stop it tracking through your house.

Far and away the best cat litter box mat I've seen is a sort of rubbery textured, honeycomb pillow-case style of mat. It's non-slip, soft on paws and it's so easy to lift up and carry outside to shake the contents out. It can easily be hosed off and scrubbed if your cat has an accident on it too.

Absorbable, waterproof under-pads are a great tool

A large earth-friendly plant-based puppy training pad (60 x 90 cm size) designed for the lesser species (aka DOG) works a treat for lying underneath the tray. Put them shiny side down and absorbent side up as an easy cleanup for those cats that sometimes miss the tray.
